Equipment

  • Equipment 1:
  • Name: Cocktail Shaker
  • Notes: Fill halfway with ice before adding ingredients
  • Equipment 2:
  • Name: Highball Glass
  • Notes: Chill in freezer 2–3 minutes before serving for best results
  • Equipment 3:
  • Name: Jigger / Measuring Shot Glass
  • Notes: Use for precise ½ oz and 1 oz measurements
  • Equipment 4:
  • Name: Bar Strainer
  • Notes: Use to strain cocktail from shaker into glass cleanly
  • Equipment 5:
  • Name: Tall Shot Glasses (optional)
  • Notes: Pre-chill in freezer if making shots instead of full cocktail

Method

  1. Step 1:
  2. Chill Your Glass
  3. Fill your highball glass ¾ full with ice and place it in the freezer for 2–3 minutes while you prepare the cocktail. A cold glass keeps the drink colder longer and gives you a better first sip.
  4. Step 2:
  5. Fill the Shaker
  6. Fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add the spiced rum, coconut rum, blue curaçao, midori melon liqueur, pineapple juice, and sweet and sour mix — in that order. Liquids always go on top of the ice.
  7. Step 3:
  8. Shake Vigorously
  9. Seal the cocktail shaker and shake hard for 20 to 30 seconds. The outside of the shaker should feel cold to the touch when fully chilled. This step is what gives the liquid maria juana drink its smooth, well-combined texture.
  10. Step 4:
  11. Strain Into Glass
  12. Remove your chilled highball glass from the freezer and add fresh ice. Strain the cocktail mixture from the shaker directly into the glass. Watch the vibrant green color develop as it pours.
  13. Step 5:
  14. Garnish and Serve
  15. Add a pineapple wedge on the rim and a maraschino cherry on top. Serve immediately. For a sparkling version, top with a splash of tonic water or lemon-lime soda.

Notes

SHOT VERSION: Use ¼ oz of each spirit and ½ oz each of pineapple juice and sweet and sour mix. Shake the same way and divide between 2 pre-chilled tall shot glasses.
MAKE AHEAD: Mix all liquid ingredients (no ice) and store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Shake over ice individually when ready to serve.
COLOR TIP: Both blue curaçao AND midori are required for the green color. Skipping either one will change the final color completely.
NON-ALCOHOLIC VERSION: Replace spiced rum with apple juice, coconut rum with coconut water, blue curaçao with blue sports drink, and midori with pureed honeydew melon.
SWEETNESS TIP: If your drink is too sweet, replace sweet and sour mix with equal parts fresh lemon juice and lime juice for a sharper, less sugary finish.
ALCOHOL NOTICE: This cocktail contains alcohol and is intended for adults aged 21 and over. Please drink responsibly.
